Abilities: Johanna Constantine is a practitioner of Ritual Magic, mostly religious-based and including:
- Protection: An ability to protect someone from either physical or psychic harm by circle magic, which is a circle of space drawn out by users of ritual magic.
- Summoning: Johanna is able to summon demons, using circle magic. Presumably, she would also be able to summon other non-human entities, such as the Endless.
- Exorcism/Banishment, Opening and Closing Portals to Hell: this is part of the exorcism/banishing procedure, in which Latin phrases (mostly from the Rituale Romanum) are uttered, causing the portal to become open long enough for a demon to be cast back down to Hell, and then closed behind them.
- Necromancy: This is communication with the dead or deceased, usually by summoning their spirits for the purpose of divination. Often necromancers can also resurrect the dead, but since we haven't seen Johanna actually do that yet in-series, I'm not listing that particular part of necromancy as one of her abilities. But she has been seen to communicate with ghosts, namely Mad Hettie, the ghost of a woman who's supposedly died 280 years earlier.

Ability Nerfing: (subject to mod approval)

- Johanna will still be able to cast a circle of protection to protect herself or someone else, in-game, from harm either physical or of magic that others are able to use, as well as binding spells to subdue human or non-human entities. These will only work 50% of the time she attempts to cast them, however.
- She will not be able to summon demons from Hell or entities from any other realm, using her magic - nor will she be able to open portals to Hell in the game.
- Her necromancy abilities will be limited to simple, rudimentary communication with any deceased that may be present in the game, perhaps through the use of a séance ritual. But it will be a very short-lived communication, and she won't be able to perform it consistently.

**Note: It should also go down on record that in addition to her magical abilities, Johanna is also an excellent con artist and negotiator in her own right. These skills are often more useful than her magical ones, and would be especially so in Nightfell, where her magic is nerfed.




♰ SUITABILITY

Strengths:
Cunning. It's not just her magic that she relies on to perform her duties as an exorcist and occult detective; Johanna uses her wit and intellect, along with her magical prowess, to defeat foes. She'll be able to get by in an adverse environment, even if her magical abilities are nerfed, somewhat.
Ruthless. Johanna will basically stop at literally nothing to achieve her goals, whether it's performing exorcisms or refusing to allow herself to be too distracted by a romantic entanglement. This can be a double-edged sword, given that her ruthless ghosting of romantic partners tends to lend her to a 'love em & leave em' kind of attitude towards those types of attachments, but at her core it's to protect herself, while doing what's necessary to get the job done. Someone who's a little ruthless might actually benefit from this strength, in Nightfell.
Compassionate. Despite the fact that she isn't bleeding-heart levels of devotion toward everyone she meets (RIP, Kevin Brody), Johanna does have a moral compass - perhaps even a stronger one than her doppelganger, John Constantine in the DC Comics series, the character upon whom she's based. She's a humanist who has peoples' best interests at heart generally, and she shows tremendous loyalty to her friends, the ones that survive, willing to step up to the plate for them at her own expense. She may not care for every single other Restless she encounters, but upon growing closer and developing bonds with them, she will come to look out for them in various ways.


Weaknesses:
Crass. Johanna swears like a sailor, and comes across as being fairly rude and abrasive to nearly everyone she meets at first (and heck, even to her friends sometimes, as well). It's a no-bullshit kind of attitude, but not everyone looks upon that favorably. Also, she's a clutterbug and a slob, and her flat is a mess; just ask Morpheus.
Escapist. Johanna seems to prefer to distract herself from her problems and run in the other direction from them, particularly when it comes to interpersonal relationships.
Unfortunately this tends to be a pattern in her romantic entanglements, and she's developed a reputation as a 'selfish, ruinous coward' because of it, especially when it comes to romantic partners.
Cynical. Johanna's outlook is pretty grim, having dabbled in the occult for most of her life and dealt with not only supernatural unpleasantness, but also the negative way it tends to affect those she cares about. She's not going to be one to be overly hopeful in a situation like the one she'll find herself in, as one of the Restless, but she's at least stubborn enough not to give in to despair.


Fears:
Losing loved ones to Hell, and/or some other nefarious end. Johanna is haunted by the deaths she's inadvertently (and sometimes advertently) caused, and is concerned that she damns everyone she gets close to, because of the work that she does. She manages this fear rather terribly, usually by internalizing it in the form of guilt and nightmares.
Commitment/Romantic attachment. She tends to have very short-term relationships, and runs out and ghosts romantic partners frequently when things get too serious for her liking. This is mainly because of her tendencies toward cynicism and escapism, running away to avoid dealing with the fallout of those relationships.


Desires:
Romantic attachment. She's extremely lonely, living a very solitary life, and craves companionship despite how terribly she tends to manage it. It's a conundrum.
Atonement. She wants to redeem herself for the many mistakes she's made in her line of work, whether it's professional mistakes that have cost people their lives, or interpersonal mistakes that have cost people their hearts.


Regrets:
- Astra Logue. Rachel Moodie. Countless others; basically anyone she's had an attachment to, whom she's lost.

Tethers: briefly describe your character's Tethers and their attachment to them.
- Rituale Romanum. This is a book of Latin incantations that Johanna uses to perform exorcisms and Catholic ritual magic. She doesn't always need the book in front of her to perform her duties, having memorized countless incantations, but it can be extremely useful.
- Crucifix. A Catholic symbol of the martyrdom of Jesus Christ, another item she typically uses during exorcisms. It's a powerful totem for several reasons, even if she doesn't seem outwardly devoted to the religion.
- Umbrella. Johanna is seen several times in the series under an umbrella, usually in the pouring rain, and the symbolism of such an item in media and lore typically suggests the canopy of the heavens, shelter, and divine protection. It's possible that for her character in the series it's a symbol of luck, something inherent to her bloodline and the legacy of the "Laughing Magicians", and perhaps also suggests protection that she might able to extend to other characters later on, in the series.
